TXS FIREFIGHTER INJURED AT FIRE THAT INJURED 8

Sunday, February 28, 2016  A house fire in North Austin displaced a family of eight on Thursday morning, Austin firefighters said.A smoke alarm woke up the family -- four adults and four young children -- and they were able to get out unharmed, fire Division Chief Palmer Buck said. A firefighter injured his back while working at the scene and was taken to the hospital in good condition. Buck declined to say how the firefighter was injured.

Firefighters responded just before 5 a.m. to a fire in the 2400 block of Blalock Drive, Buck said. They arrived in about three minutes and saw heavy fire coming from the garage and two cars.

Buck said firefighters should be able to determine a cause later Thursday.

The fire destroyed the home's attached garage and damaged the attic as well as the two cars, he said.

The American Red Cross will be assisting the displaced family, fire officials said.

Resident Susan Delara said she doesn't know what could have caused her house to catch fire.

"My first thought was just to get my kids out, get them safe," she said.

Her children, ages 8 and 4, lived in the house with her niece and nephew, ages 1 and 2, she said.
